Thermoregulation and sleep onset

Your body needs to drop its core temperature by about 1°C to fall asleep. This is why you always sleep worse in a hot room. The cooling techniques in this guide work by helping your body shed heat faster through your extremities, especially your hands and feet, which act as radiators.

Evaporative cooling

When water evaporates from a surface, it absorbs heat. This is why a damp cloth on your skin feels cool. In dry heat, evaporation happens fast and the effect is strong. In humid heat, evaporation slows down, which is why humid heatwaves feel worse and why fans become less effective above about 35°C with high humidity.

Thermal mass and timing

Your walls, floor, and furniture absorb heat during the day and release it at night. This is called thermal mass, and it means your room can stay hot hours after the outside temperature drops. Starting your cooling routine 2-3 hours before bed lets you get ahead of this stored heat.

Sleep position and surface area

The "starfish" position (arms up, legs apart) maximizes the skin surface exposed to air, which increases heat loss. Curling up minimizes it. In extreme heat, sleeping on your back with limbs spread can make a noticeable difference in how quickly you cool down.

Bedding and breathability

Natural fibers like cotton and linen have a moisture regain of 8-17%, meaning they absorb sweat and let it evaporate. Polyester absorbs less than 1%. A cotton sheet between you and a synthetic blanket can cut your perceived temperature by 2-3°C.

Hydration timing

Drinking cold water helps, but the effect is modest and temporary. What matters more is being well-hydrated overall so your body can sweat efficiently. Chugging water right before bed mainly leads to bathroom trips that break your sleep. Sip steadily from late afternoon onward.

Common Mistakes That Make It Worse

Some popular advice backfires. Here is what to avoid.

Ice-cold shower right before bed

It feels great for two minutes, but your body compensates by constricting blood vessels, then rebounding with vasodilation. You can end up feeling hotter 40 minutes later. Use lukewarm water instead. It opens blood vessels and lets heat radiate out naturally.

Pointing a fan directly at your face all night

Direct airflow dries out your nasal passages and throat, causing congestion that disrupts sleep. Better to point the fan at your body or use it to pull hot air out of the room by placing it in a window.

Opening windows during the hottest part of the day

If it is 38°C outside and 32°C inside, opening windows heats your room faster. Keep windows and blinds closed when outside temperature exceeds inside temperature. Open them only after sunset when the outside air cools down.

Sleeping on a memory foam mattress topper

Memory foam retains body heat. During a heatwave, flip your mattress if possible, or move your sleeping setup to the floor where it is cooler. Even a camping mat on the floor can be cooler than a memory foam bed.

Eating a large meal close to bedtime

Digestion generates metabolic heat. A heavy meal within two hours of bed can raise your core temperature enough to delay sleep onset. Eat lighter in summer, and finish eating at least three hours before you plan to sleep.

Using a regular ice pack directly on skin

Direct ice contact causes blood vessels to constrict, trapping heat inside. Wrap ice packs in a thin towel. Better yet, use a damp cloth, which cools through evaporation rather than conduction.

How People Slept Before Air Conditioning

Methods from the 1930s and earlier that still work today.

The transatlantic crossing method

Passengers on ships crossing the Atlantic in summer would hang damp sheets in cabin doorways. The slight breeze from ship movement caused evaporation that dropped the perceived temperature by several degrees. You can replicate this by hanging a damp sheet in front of an open window with a fan behind it.

Sleeping porches

From the 1890s through the 1940s, many homes in the American South and Midwest had screened sleeping porches. Families would move their beds outside onto these covered porches to catch any breeze. The principle is simple: outdoor air at night is almost always cooler than indoor air trapped in thermal mass.

Brick floor sleeping

In Mediterranean and Middle Eastern homes, people slept on tile or stone floors during summer. These materials stay cool because they have high thermal mass and conduct heat away from the body. If you have tile or concrete floors, sleeping on a thin mat directly on the floor can be 3-5°C cooler than a bed.

The Egyptian method

One of the oldest documented cooling techniques: sleep on a mat with a damp cloth underneath. As the water evaporates overnight, it pulls heat from the sleeping surface. Modern version: place a damp towel under your fitted sheet.

Cross-ventilation planning

Pre-AC architecture in hot climates was designed around cross-ventilation. Windows on opposite walls, high ceilings, and central hallways all served to move air through the building. You can mimic this by opening windows on opposite sides of your apartment and placing a fan to push hot air out one side.

Night air flushing

Before AC, people would open every window and door the moment the outside temperature dropped below the inside temperature, often around 9 or 10 PM. They would use fans to flush the stored heat out of the building. This is still one of the most effective strategies for any home without AC.

Body Positioning for Maximum Cooling

How you lie in bed affects how fast your body sheds heat.

Best positions for hot nights

  1. On your back, starfish style. Arms up near your head, legs apart. This exposes the most skin surface to air and lets heat radiate from your armpits and groin, where major blood vessels sit close to the surface.
  2. On your side, with a pillow between your knees. This keeps your legs slightly apart and prevents your thighs from trapping heat against each other.
  3. Feet off the covers. Your feet are one of your body's main heat radiators. Let them stick out from under the blanket. If you use a sheet, push it down to waist level.
  4. Elevate your head slightly. Heat rises. Sleeping with an extra pillow can move your head into a slightly cooler layer of air.

Heatwave Sleep Cheat Sheet

3 Hours Before Bed

  • Close all windows and blinds
  • Turn on fans to pre-cool the room
  • Put a cotton sheet in the freezer for 20 minutes
  • Fill a hot water bottle with cold water, freeze it

1 Hour Before Bed

  • Take a lukewarm (not cold) shower
  • Put on damp cotton socks
  • Place frozen bottle at foot of bed
  • Hang damp sheet in front of open window

At Bedtime

  • Use cotton or linen sheets only
  • Sleep in starfish position
  • Keep feet outside the covers
  • Point fan at body, not face
  • Keep a spray bottle of water nearby

If You Wake Up Hot

  • Spray wrists and neck with cool water
  • Run cold water over wrists for 30 seconds
  • Move to the floor if bed feels hot
  • Do not take a cold shower (it backfires)

When to Worry

Heat can become dangerous. Know the warning signs.

Heat exhaustion

Heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, dizziness, headache, cool clammy skin. Move to a cool place, sip water, apply cool wet cloths. If symptoms last more than an hour, get medical help.

Heat stroke (emergency)

Body temperature above 40°C, hot dry skin, confusion, rapid pulse, loss of consciousness. Call emergency services immediately. This is life-threatening. Cool the person with any means available while waiting for help.
